About Steve

Who is Steve McGirr and why does The Steve McGirr Charitable Foundation exist?

Steve McGirr grew up in wine country, Bennet Valley, Santa Rosa, CA. He attended Montgomery High School, Santa Rosa Junior College and received his double major in Criminal Justice and Psychology at California State University Sacramento.

He loved the outdoors – especially fishing, camping, rugby, and golf. He was always a true friend and never knew a stranger. Anyone who touched his life immediately became his friend. Steve had a wonderful sense of humor and was loved by all.

Steve was endingly gregarious by nature, but he also enjoyed the solitude of the outdoors and being amongst nature. Steve was an avid and accomplished fly fisherman and would bend anyone’s ear that would listen to his fish stories.

Rugby was Steve’s passion as a young man. He started playing at Santa Rosa Junior College, continued to play at California State University Sacramento, and then with the Sacramento Men’s Rugby Football Club, The Capitals.  Steve especially loved the comradery of the sport and the relationships he formed along the way.

His tremendous enthusiasm for Rugby was not just in playing, but as a fan, and an ambassador of the game. He traveled to San Diego, Las Vegas, various cities on the west coast and even to Europe to take part in the atmosphere of the matches, both amateur and professional.

Steve continued to contribute to this wonderful culture by coaching Rugby and spreading his love of the sport, long after his playing days were done.

Steve’s longtime friends, family and rugby brothers originally came together for a golf and dinner event in the Summer of 2011 to celebrate our friendships and bonds, what no one knew was that this would be Steve’s last summer amongst friends and loved ones. Fortunately, everyone was able to come together in Steve’s last summer at our Charitable Golf Event, with over 120 golfers and over 200 attendees for, what we now know, would be the birth of the Steve McGirr Charitable Foundation.

The Foundation was born, and has strived from the start, to ease the financial and emotional burden of families stricken by this terrible, unrelenting disease. Since then, the foundation has given thousands of dollars directly to families in need during their darkest hours.

Steve is survived by his wife Cindy and their two beautiful daughters, Jordan and Peyton, as well as his parents Steve (Big Steve) and Pat (Momma) McGirr; brother Michael McGirr, nephew Tristan, niece Bella; and in-laws David and Karen Alexander.

Our Man Steve was a cherished brother, father, husband, son, and friend to many.

Our focus is to continue to grow the Foundation in his honor and continue to provide support for those impacted with Glioblastomas, brain tumors. Your support will help us in our mission.
